Rowing Rowing or “crew” is a tight-knit team sport that values teamwork, following cues, and endurance. The act of rowing itself simply means using oars to move a boat through water. Rowing teams are made up of two, four, or eight rowers with one coxswain, who sits in front of the boat facing the team and shouts directions to the rowers. By rowing in sync, teams can generate more speed.
