How To Celebrate Women’s History Month with Your Family

March 6, 2023 | 3 minutes, 49 seconds read

Happy mother and son go in sports outdoors.

March is Women’s History Month. Instead of letting the opportunity pass by this year, inject your sports travel with educational moments that the whole family will enjoy.

Want more information on the background of Women’s History Month or help with where to start? womenshistorymonth.gov is a great resource. It has lots of virtual events, online exhibits and collections, and videos to get you started. Read on for more ideas on getting your kids excited to learn about women who changed the world this month.

Check Out the Library

Each year, a specific theme is designated for Women’s History Month. This year, it’s Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories. This is the perfect excuse to seek out stories by and about women’s experiences throughout history. Make a trip to the library in the next town you visit (we love free fun!) to explore classic or modern books by female authors, from Jane Austen to Toni Morrison. Bonus points if the library has events or education on books by women this month! You can find lots of recommended reading lists catering to age, reading level, and topic online.

Watch Movies and Documentaries

Sneak a biopic or documentary about an inspirational woman onto your kids’ screens in the car, and they might not even know you secretly had educational motivations! Resistant kids can earn more screen time by watching one of your suggestions first. From political leaders to scientists to activists, your family won’t regret learning more about their favorite superheroines when learning is disguised as entertainment. There are many places to find suggestions, but a great place to start is the list the Oscars compiled of their “50 Films to Watch During Women’s History Month.” The recommendations were made by female writers, directors, and actors and included various genres of iconic films.

Plan a Field Trip (in Person or Virtual)

Museums are, of course, a treasure trove of wonderfully curated exhibits on historical women. See if your tournament destination has a museum with any special exhibits or events for Women’s History Month. If you’re not near any museums with exhibits for Women’s History Month, there are great websites that can offer similar information from the comfort of your hotel, like the National Women’s History Museum.

Memorize a Poem or Quote by a Famous Woman

Though they might call you old-fashioned, the art of memorization still has value today. Choosing something to memorize will force kids to think repeatedly about what speaks to them and what words are important enough. Spin it as a car game or engage kids not playing during the game to pass the travel time. Plus, you never know when they’ll be able to impress their friends by answering a trivia question correctly!

Cater to Your Kids’ Unique Interests

There are iconic women in every field, including the things your children are interested in. Have a budding astronaut on your hands? Teach them about Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Sports lovers can dig into some of the all-time greats who helped break barriers in sports, from Jackie Joyner-Kersee to Mia Hamm. They’ll gain a better knowledge of individual athletes as well as women’s sports as a whole. As with any lesson you want to pass along, relevant topics will peak the most interest.

Watch Amazing Female Athletes

Your family's big and little sports fans will be delighted to be treated to a professional women’s sporting event. From soccer to basketball, if there is a women’s team in the destination you’re traveling to, don’t miss the chance to see these amazing athletes up close and live. The whole family will be inspired by their athleticism and determination.
