We are nearing the end of March Madness, basketball’s version of swimming championships. This led to an interesting conversation about if a coach is that critical in the performance of athletes in all sports. Being a sports parent and a swim mom for nearly two decades, the answer is simple. Great coaches are the architects of champions. In no way is this meant to take away from the talent and hard work needed to excel at the highest levels. That is a given. But behind every young athlete are coaches who believed in them along their journey. The words that Coach K spoke to his star a few weeks ago ring true in every sport: “You Were Made for this Moment.” It happened again when another coached turned to his senior this weekend and challenged him to be the leader and bring the game home.
