Breaststroke Record Set in Rio Olympic Games

Englishman Adam Peaty set the world record in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 7, 2016. In the preliminary heats, Peaty broke his own world record of 57.55 seconds, which he set in 2015. Then he broke the record again, this time in the finals with winning with a time of 57.13 seconds.

Peaty, who is considered one of most successful British swimmers of all time has broken world records 11 times and currently holds world marks for the breaststroke in two events: the 50-meter (25.95 seconds) and 100-meter (56.88). He was also the first man to complete the 100-meter breaststroke in less than 58 seconds and then he established a new mark by finishing the event in less than 57 seconds. Peaty is one of three swimmers to own gold medals in the same event from all four major international competitions (Olympic, World, European, Commonwealth Games) at the same time.
