The Union of European Football Associations Super Cup is played every year and features the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, the primary European soccer club competitions. 

Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Sevilla met in the 41st UEFA Super Cup on Aug. 9, 2016, at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway. Real Madrid won the match 3-2 after extra time. Marco Asensio, a 20-year-old who was playing in his first European match appearance, scored the opening goal for Real Madrid in the 21st minute. Franco Vasquez scored the equalizer for Sevilla in the 41st minute. After the teams traded a pair of second-half goals that tied the game at 2 and forced extra time, Dani Carvajal recorded the game-winning goal in the 119th minute. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who had a second-half tally, was the Man of the Match, an award given by the UEFA to the top player in every knockout stage game.
