Gary Player won his second straight U.S. Senior Open in golf on Aug. 8, 1988, taking $65,000 in winnings at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois. He carded a 68 to best the 70 from Bob Charles of New Zealand in an 18-hole playoff to earn the victory, the fourth of five monied Senior PGA Tour (now known as the PGA Tour Champions) events he won that season. Player and Charles finished tied atop the leaderboard with an even-par 288 after four rounds, forcing the playoff.

During his career, Player won nine major championships on the regular tour and nine championships on the PGA Tour Champions. A South African native, Player competed in his first round of golf when he was 14 years old, and parred the first three holes. He turned professional at the age of 17. In 1965, Player became the first and only non-American to win all four major golf events in a career, and he was voted Sportsman of the Century in South Africa in 2000.
