Are you considering stepping up and coaching a youth sports team? Great idea, as long as you keep a few pointers in mind. Coaching youth sports is rewarding in many ways, and ultimately is a worthwhile experience - but it’s one that comes with a number of responsibilities. You will be a mentor, role model and leader for a number of youngsters, and they will come to rely on your for advice outside of sports. As such, it’s important you understand three ways to succeed as a youth athletics coach.

1. Build a team sport website
This tool will save you a ton of hassle. Sports software is powerful enough to be a messaging platform, scheduling platform, registration center and more. Parents and organizers can access your website to find out about schedule updates and changes, and an FAQ section can offer clarity for anyone else with questions.

2. Put the team’s success first
That means emphasizing team progress over individual accolades - as well as your own image. Be ready to admit your mistakes, listen to advice and not worry about losses. Team sports are more about showing kids how to be good sports than it is teaching them to be good at sports - there is a distinct difference. As such, team success should always be the priority, and that doesn’t necessarily mean having a perfect record. Set goals like playing together, giving an all-out effort and becoming better over the season. A cohesive team means you’ve done your job.

3. Be more than just a coach
Kids come from various backgrounds and not all of them have reliable role models. But even the ones that do could always use another - and the coach should be a perfect example. The best youth coaches are teachers, voices of reason, friends, teammates and students themselves. If it sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. Coaching is an important job that requires many different hats - and they change depending on the player. You have to read your athletes and know which style of teaching is the best way to reach them.

When you set out to become a youth sports coach, these three tips are a good place to start. Coaching is an important job - by putting the team first, creating a sport team website and performing several different roles you can prove to be an effective leader and positive impact on kids’ lives.
