Handling a Lopsided Game As you coach young athletes and manage the team websites, it is almost inevitable that the group will at some point be on one end or the other of a blow out game. These are rarely enjoyable, and while some leagues have mercy rules that allow the match to end before its natural conclusion, in many cases the two teams have to simply ride it out. Even with careful rules in place to avoid stacking the most talented players on the same team, youth sports teams undergo hot and cold streaks more commonly than their professional counterparts. Sometimes, it just is not working - and other times, it seems they can’t miss. When you find yourself in the uncomfortable position of a blowout, there are a few things your should keep in mind. Winning with grace It is imperative your youngsters resist the urge to gloat or loaf if they have a significant lead. It is unsportsmanlike, engenders laziness and does not bode well for future success. The values kids are supposed to gain though their athletic experiences are constant effort, teamwork and respect. If you act graciously to your opponent when you are on top, they will respect you and treat you with the same dignity when you find yourself in their position. Plus, ending the game with lethargy can roll into the beginning of the next match, giving you a disadvantage. Losing with dignity Sometimes, the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. Your athletes have to be prepared to overcome strokes of bad luck with mental perseverance and effort. Giving up cannot be tolerated, especially in youth sports, where huge comebacks are never out of the question. But even in cases when the chances of victory are effectively zero, giving an all-out effort will allow your team to take some pride on the day, and move on to the next game. Giving everyone a chance to play If you are dissatisfied with the effort your players give, you can opt to take them out and give other players a chance to demonstrate their worth. Often, kids who aren’t the stars of the team will display poise and energy all the way until the ending buzzer, inspiring their teammates and proving their mettle. No one wants to be part of a lopsided game, neither winners nor losers. The games are best when they are close. But you can at least use the team sport website to broadcast your expectations when that unfortunate outcome occurs. tags in this article Athlete Fan Issues & Advice SportsEngine
